Open To Criticism podcast
In March 2023 I launched my podcast Open To Criticism. Focussing on how we talk about movies, who gets to do it and why it matters, it seemed the obvious way to take my academic research forward - and put it out into the real world. My 2022 Masters dissertation investigated the ways that #MeToo, BLM and Times Up is changing the way critics are perceiving and critiquing cinema and onscreen representation. Each week I chat with critics, cultural commentators and academics to help us all better understand why a variety of perspectives about our culture - onscreen and beyond - is imperative for a more fair and indeed interesting society.
Film Reviews
|
.
I review regularly on the the BBC Radio Scotland Afternoon Show and write psychologically informed reviews for The Psychologist magazine. I'm always keen to review films from a feminist and socio-political perspective - like this critique of Promising Young Woman for Film Review Daily - so do get in touch if you think my voice has something to offer your outlet. |
For my BSc Psychology research project in 2019 with the Open University I carried out an analysis of film critic reviews of the film Red Sparrow to see if critics interpretations of onscreen sexual violence and misogyny had shifted in response to #MeToo.
You can hear me discussing my findings with fellow critic Anna Smith on her excellent feminist film podcast Girls on Film.
In Jan 2022 I achieved an MSc in Culture and Society with distinction from The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). My associated dissertation further developed my critic research, investigating diversity issues and those of representation in cinema, critique and wider media - which has increasingly become my focus over my 25+ year career as a critic - and inspired my podcast - see above.

My film critic origins... |
I became a critic in 1993 - inspired to step in due to various snooty, unrepresentative reviews of "So I Married An Axe Murderer". There appeared to be gap in the market for a mouthy young woman who believed good cinema could also be fun. I'd like to think that my timely arrival played a role, however small, in making this Mike Myers sleeper the cult classic it is today (yeah baby).
I have hosted many film shows for TV and Radio, including ITV's The Little Picture Show, and been an elected member of the UK Film Critics' Circle since 1999. So, I say a mighty thank you to Mike Myers, and his paranoid coffee loving character, for being my inspiration, as I continue to review in a freelance capacity for many outlets including The Afternoon Show on BBC Scotland, Sky News and many others.
